چکیده

background: viral warts are a common problem especially in young people. they are important as they are transmittable and cause social embarrassment. though there are several treatments for viral warts, none offer a fast, simple, complete cure by itself. a simple and inexpensive way of treatment would be outstanding, especially in developing countries. we aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of topical puncture with 85% formic acid solution in patients with warts. methods: a placebo-controlled, clinical trial was performed on patients with common viral warts who were referred to khorshid and beheshti dermatology centers (isfahan, iran) during 2003-04. a total of 34 patients received 85% formic acid solution on their lesion on one side of the body and distilled water as placebo on the other side every other day. both sides were injected using needle puncture technique. patients were followed up every two weeks until three months. findings: formic acid application resulted in complete disappearance of 91% of warts. this rate was 10% after the application of placebo. conclusion: the application of 85% formic acid solution is a safe and effective treatment for common warts with few side effects and good compliance.
